@mint if only there was a technical solution to people wanting to talk on a social network
@menherahair >THIS IS A THREAD FOR ME AND MY FRIENDS, WHY ARE YOU POSTING IN IT?
Because I can and I have words to say, duh. Sounds like Discord guild would be more fitting for you.

@mint @menherahair why hasn't he made spw into a discord server yet then

@lina @mint if you read carefully he only dislikes "rage replying" which as far as I understand is when a person sees something they don't like and replies to it in a way nobody enjoys. how the fuck has he figured that
1. unpleasant people existing is a problem you can solve with platform design
2. unpleasant people existing is a problem you *should* solve with platform design
much like yourself, is beyond me

@menherahair @lina @mint You can't solve it, that's the issue. There will always be some retard that reads only one post from the whole thread and replies with "you are the truest example of cattle I've seen so far, if you think like that k thanks bye." It's an internet culture issue that been a thing since it's adoption. You can ban these people from your instance, but that changes nothing as their account will pop up somewhere else even more destined to shit up threads.

@phnt @lina @menherahair @mint all that happens is you get resetera where discussion is impossible because everyone is banned for "drive by trolling"
@phnt @lina @mint as much as I'd like to I wouldn't call having to exist with people on earth an issue and this is just an extension of that. as far as I'm concerned we're living in a blessed time with the most graceful solution ever conceived: they're posting their inane ramblings on some shithole on the internet, possibly on their own dime because the platform is community driven, and you can mute them if you're a pussy. there's nothing to fix!
@menherahair @lina @mint It gets annoying when you are trying to have a discussion and some idiot completely derails it, which is also what happened in that thread. There's a solution to this, but it has so many repercussions that it isn't worth it (picrel)

@menherahair @phnt @mint if you tell people to not care about spergs then the spergs will start getting uppity irl
who fuck my chicken?? ![]()
@lina @mint @phnt well I know how, you fail at driving them out. at one point human life was easy, you throw the undesirable into the desert and he starves. then there were more open communities and he goes there, so they have to drive them out too and then he may starve. now we have internet and our wonderful untameable fediverse where any ideas can foster communities unless the gov intervenes, but they don't, in fact most of the world strives to provide egalitarian care.
there's only two correct approaches to social undesirables:
1. ignore
2. be cruel
then they starve and die. if they're not starving people are failing at the above or are in fact somehow desirable. now people around the world are taught daily to not do the above while we search for a miracle method that's more humane and probably doesn't exist so half the place is naturally ran by psychopaths and pedophiles

@menherahair @lina @mint all of you are midwits at best, except mint, who is smart but chooses to make posts like this, understanding what I said, because he is also the only one who read the whole thread.
@lina @menherahair @mint he knows I'm not arguing for censorship or making an impotent plea for people to be more polite, something that is never going to happen. All I said was, the basic design decisions of a social media app affect the outcome, and drive by comments bothering people are the natural result of dumping every fucking reply in someone's tl even if they aren't participating in the conversation. This is a really fucking simple concept.
@sun @lina @menherahair My disagreement comes from the fact I find negative connotations of "drive-bys" and "reply guys" ridiculous. It's a social fucking network, in its most raw and unfiltered state. I like it being a chaotic stream of consciousness, makes it more lively than said engagement farms.
@mint @lina @menherahair I respect that different people want different things out of the network. nothing I said would take away your ability to operate it according to your preference
@sun @lina @mint I have a much braver hypothesis that given "all replies on timeline mode" is the most accurate representation of the underlaying network/protocol/something, it's bad/wrong/undesirable to strive from that without user input. i wanna think about this more before I'm willing to defend it but I suspect other people may believe something similar
@menherahair @lina @mint I'm interested. to be clear, I feel like when I say stuff it gets presented with deep connotation about why I am saying it that often just isn't true. I have feelings about the best way to present timelines but like, it's not THAT strong. I just have opinions. Nobody cares, except to sometimes act like Im trying to cut their balls off when I say it.
@menherahair
I definitely do. I'm not even clear what having "OP only" timeline would do that's somehow better, since on the fediverse most people are only seeing who they follow. If your follows are boosting bullshit, you're following the wrong people or if not, you just mute or block the shithead you don't want to see anymore.

@sun @lina @mint
@leyonhjelm @lina @menherahair @mint if you guys want I could later write a very detailed thing about exactly what I think would help and about how it doesn't actually adversely affect anybody in this thread that disagreed with what I said
@sun @lina @menherahair If something *gets* replies, it's something worth discussion or at least ridicule. There's a pattern I keep seeing with you, you start to passionately argue about some topic (e.g. slop machines) then you felt when getting disagreed in the same heat of passion. This one suggestion in OP sounds like a logical solution you coined for your emotional burden.
@mint @lina @menherahair it's really not, I've been here for ten years and argued a lot, I really only started disengaging fairly recently, shortly after a life change that required me to not spend as much time arguing online. I still do it too much.
@mint @lina @menherahair Also I just checked my mutes and the vast majority of them are not "people I don't want to argue with" they're mastodon accounts that just talk about stuff I'm not interested in. I said I was gonna mute a lot more and I have somewhat but not actually that much tbh.
@lina @menherahair @mint I am actualy disengaging now though because I think I said everything I wanted to say. mainly to add though that yeah you can manage your own experience but the ui determines what even gets posted in the first place.
@sun @lina @menherahair Either way @phnt made a good argument for replies in timeline. replies often hold more value than starting posts to begin with, by offering more context or argument or derailing it into the more exciting topic entirely. Whether that's a good tradeoff for not having random people responding to public posts is debatable, but people who think it is strike me as those who take more than they give.
I want to see the drive-bys, I want to experience the rage.
@sun @lina @menherahair And pleromer has mitigations as well, from the mute button you're intimately familiar with to tha bility to hide notifications from non-followed people (unless it's something I just hallucinated, it's an option in newer fluoride FE).
@mint @lina @menherahair @sun It has the notif filter and also has a similar tl filter. Don't like replies on your tls? Turn that off.

@phnt @lina @menherahair @mint the fact that it's not the default drags in traffic that otherwise just wouldn't exist even if you make it invisible.
@sun @lina @menherahair @mint See my posts above why I prefer the current default. Similarly my first reply is how both of our arguments are equally valid and how if you change it, the other side will get frustrated. There's no good default here that most users will like.
As for more traffic, I think that is still a good thing even though it tends to create unwanted derailment by less inteligent forms of life that can't see the difference between seriousposting and shitposting threads. I think the ratio is still far higher for wanted traffic. Other than that, this is a social media network, traffic is kinda what you want anyway. See what friends and others you follow talk about.

@phnt @lina @menherahair @mint that's a fair argument, at this point maybe it's not the right time to change anymore, if someone even thought it was a good idea to change it it will make a bunch of people unhappy
@sun
Everything makes half the people unhappy and the other half happy. That's what we used to be constantly reminded of when the mass blocking campaigns were ongoing.
I see this whole thread as a product of frustration with a declining in population on the whole on the fediverse (including a lot of users who made the place great) and of the lack of a common opponent like we used to have when far-left extremists used to put us on blacklists over the most ridiculous things.
When we were getting blocked for being vaguely different from the other admins' politics or for federating with other blacklisted instances, our miscreant forces had someone else to take it out on that didn't cause friction on this side of the fediverse nearly as much as we see now.

@leyonhjelm the original post I made wasnt even that upset about anything
@sun
I know, I am not singling anyone out here. I'm talking about the literal whole thread and the tone shift of the fediverse, and I didn't mean for you to feel like I meant you specifically. It's different and I've seen you touch on this in other threads as well. When the population changes, or when the world shifts to different topics, the vibe changes and I liked it better a few years ago.
We do disagree on the merits of a technical solution here but that's not personal and shouldn't be interpreted as a character judgement.

@phnt @lina @menherahair @mint gonna be honest I don't consider them equally valid, one side is "this is more fun" and the other side is "this is less fun" this is a philosophical argument about if its better to prioritize someone else's fun/utility over something some other people just can't tolerate. you can call them weak or whatever of course though. not talking about me. but the thing I proposed exists exactly for that reason
@sun @lina @menherahair @mint Do you get large amounts of unwanted traffic? I consider the sides equal because I rarely do. On the other hand I'm followed way less than you and don't attract the crowds that do this sort of thing.
If the amount of traffic you get is intolerable, would more filtering options help with that. Because instead of changing a default that the users doing this would just change back (not counting other clients), I think it is better to provide more filtering options instead, so that you don't have to see the traffic unless you choose to.
>shortly after a life change that required me to not spend as much time arguing online.
Feel free to reply hours or days later, doesn't matter. We can of course fight this in the next meeting with sticky notes ;)

@sun @lina @menherahair @mint Alright, I partially concede. TWKN is way more usable with replies only to follows. But doing that makes the name no longer true.
@menherahair @mint i think i concur with mint saying that he just wants his threads to be for him and his friends cuz what else does he mean by rage replying? he wants a friend only chatroom and thats fine to want that
but why the fuck is he trying to make that on the fucking freddyverse
