after living with both I personally would prefer cars over public transport. the quality of such is too dependent on location and jurisdiction. Even the most of the places that I have lived realistically cannot support public transport anyway
and it really only works well for large cities anyway, it kinda blows for anything long distance, especially where I have lived most of my life

Basically what it comes down to is that there exist on this planet some Featherless Bipeds that have a certain mastery of language, but are manifestly unfit for participation in any kind of advanced civilization.
It's not all dark skinned people, but they generally are dark skinned, and so most people are utterly incapable of acknowledging the fact and would rather create an entire universe in their head just to avoid it.
Fortunately for Europeans, our governments are NOT run by Most People, they understand the situation and are prepared to quietly remove the problem, to be imprisoned or deported or otherwise made no longer a problem.
But in America they are not so lucky, and government - either through bad faith or negligence - forces everybody to live with these monsters. America used to have beautiful urban areas like Detroit, Gary, Saint Louis, and Chicago, but these have all been turned into 3rd world hellscapes with a murder rate as bad as some literal war zones.
So Americans ran away, they ran to rural and suburban areas as far away from the cities as they could. And as a result, there's no sense in building public transport because everyone is so spread out anyway.

@cjd @xaetacore Public transport is amazing, trains will get you places faster and more comfortably than cars ever can. Instead of having the courage to address the nigger problem everyone just switched to cars and created a traffic hellscape.

I live in France, currently a rural area which is 95% white.
Even in Paris though, there is no issue with non-whites that makes public transport BAD. They're polite, quite, etc. French govt does not tolerate animalistic behavior from anyone.
Suffice to say, I'm pretty experienced with public transport - and I still prefer taking the car.

@cjd @xaetacore All of your points are purely a policy problem, rail transports cargo faster and cheaper (=less crowded) than road. Secondary transportation like tram can get you to your final destination. Wait times no longer than 5 mins if you do it right.

Well, nobody in the world has really managed to solve that problem. There are places where a train comes every 3 minutes, but that's conditioned on there being a LOT of passengers to use it.

Everything is a question of investment, if you want to pay bottom dollar for your train ticket, and spend thousands of dollars annually on your car naturally the car service will be better. But at equal investment rail beats car by a factor of 3.
And the Japanese are a special case, they have insane population density, and that's how they like it. Besides I wouldn't mind getting stuffed in with some cute girls.

Rail is a bit weird, it IS cheaper by the ton for transport of something like coal - but also there's a reason why long haul trucking companies don't go out of business.
In France rail is subsidized, and fuel is heavily taxed ($8 a gallon is the norm), but still it's cheaper in most cases to drive than it is to take a train. If you taking someone with you then it's massively cheaper.

There's a train from the big town near me to Paris, and it looks close to that nice. It's 40€ one way. It is worth it sometimes because you can relax or work while you're in transit, but taking the Volvo is like 20 in fuel for the round trip, and that carries 4 people...

First class annual ticket costs you as much as a car annually, even cheaper if you're talking about newer cars, and with number of customers the price only goes down. Sit back relax, doze off, read a book, 300km/h, no traffic jams, no parking, you can't beat that.
My car payment is about 250/month.
The public transport story is kind of complex, if you're in the Paris area you can get infinite public transport for 80/month, from here there are subscriptions but you only get a discount from the subscription.
But here's the kicker: The public transport doesn't really eliminate the need for a car. If you live where I do, it just doesn't go here. But even in a more urban area, it's shutdown at night, you can't carry big items, and it's not good in an emergency. For example: Taking my wife to the hospital to have our baby.
And once you have kids, you carry around a stroller everywhere. So public transport (as it currently exists) just doesn't really solve that need.
As a result everyone needs a car, and then that extra 80/month for public transport ends up being "in addition to" rather than "instead of"...

@Deplorable_Degenerate @xaetacore @cjd No I don't think so, but rural places can have trains too if there's incentive to build them. If anything a lack of trains is the reason why more people don't live in the countryside.

Naw, just that walking for the last three miles or so anywhere you go should be normal and expected 
I think what's realistic is certain roads will only allow cars that can switch into an autonomous mode where they might as well be a train. Then you drive from your house to the autoroute and at that point the car takes over and you read the paper. And the autoroute can be one lane because everything on that road is centrally coordinated.
That takes a hard problem that is very old and converts it into a solvable technological problem.

@Deplorable_Degenerate @xaetacore @cjd Not every 1000 feet since that's not how villages are spaced, but a train station in every village and the entire village within walking distance of it, that would be the ideal world.
1000 feet is pretty much an optimal walking range, any further and it is going to get really hard on the eldery and infirm. This isn't even touching on emergency services, not just medical but fire and police too.
Likewise not everyone lives in or near a village. Rural can have a lot of meanings, my nearest neighbor is about 600 feet away, but there is a small farming community about 1000 feet the opposite direction and several miles away from the nearest proper town.
I've seen homes separated from each other by five or more miles in some areas.
I am not against mass transit in a homogenous society, persay, but complete elimination of the alternative seems a bit much. But at least your response isn't the reddit tier answer of "well all those farmers should live in cities, farming is bad for the environment anyway!"

I'm not for eliminating cars completely, but they should be phased out as much as possible, especially in intercity travel. They're just an inefficient crutch to avoid facing the actual problems of society.

The Amish don't have cars because it's considered that they will take them too far away from their community, so in the right environment I suppose this is realistic.
If everything you need is actually walking distance, a car is optional.
But such a configuration requires a lot of trust in the governing institution, and I'd trust the "15 minute city" people like I trust an email from Nigeria.

Ofc cars will be always be needed for remote areas, but this kind of "I insulate myself so I don't have to deal with the shittification of society" thinking needs to be banned. We are one people, we travel together, we dine together, we all prosper or all perish. Rich and poor ought to eat from the same trough, and if they don't like it fix the trough.
Something that could be interesting is living in an "intentional community" that is only accessible via boat - or plane, because it has largely the impact of what the Amish do with forbidding cars.
Everybody has to make sure they have everything they need in their local community because leaving is complex. Perhaps there are one or two boats operated by members for the benefit of the community.
An additional benefit of this is where there are no roads, unwanteds will have no way of reaching you. Private boat operators, private docks, entrance by permission only...
