Sssooooo what kind of data is exchanged when you plug your EV into a public charger?

I assume there's some kind of negotiation just for the fundamental charging stuff. And I know the car communicates back its charge level. But what else?

Vehicle make/model? VIN? Some other unique ID?

@elithebearded @ieure All ISO standards are "open" for hefty fee. It's dumb. An "open" standard does not mean "free", unfortunately.

Same goes with source code. Legally you can charge people for the code to GPL software too. Most people don't do that, but it's perfectly legal to do so.

"Oh you want the source for my modified Linux kernel? Well my hourly rate is $250 so pay me $500 and you can have it. I'll ship it to you on a CDROM."

totally legal at this point. The GPLv2 guidance is weak on what you can charge, GPLv3 is much stricter, but there's no caselaw precedent for this so if you want to be a prick and force people to spend money taking you to court over it you absolutely can (and should!). The license terms are meaningless if they've never been legally tested, so we ought to test them to the max.
