Ich bin Autist und habe mich lange damit beschäftigt zu verstehen, wie die Welt funktioniert. Dabei habe ich erkannt, dass das kapitalistische System zutiefst ungerecht ist und viele Menschen darunter leiden. Deshalb setze ich mich für eine demokratische Wirtschaft ein, die sich an den Bedürfnissen der Menschen orientiert. Währenddessen fällt es mir wegen Autismus, ADHS, Sozialphobie und Depression schwer, meinen Alltag zu bewältigen und auf meine eigenen Bedürfnisse zu achten.

@feld i think it's even worse. they host on cloudflare infrastructure
currently it's for suppporters. when ready it will be a paid subscription
but they offer an open source server to self host. i think it uses mostly the same code they use. only a small javascript adapter in front of it. it's basically an API that serves an SQLite database. i'm not sure if it works for multiple users. it's end-to-end encrypted. the server does not see your data

people trust mastodon admins and hosting companies
i think it's more likely that an employee at a hosting company hate their job and leak or sell customer data than a volunteer contributing to a community service
i don't think it is a good approach to be self-sufficient, instead we should learn to work together and combine our efforts
which service would you not want anyone else to host?

I'm against #SelfHosting.
Users should not need to maintain their own server. It needs specialized knowledge to do it right.
Sysadmins who like maintaining servers can do it together in a more efficient way and spread responsibility.
They could offer services on a best-effort basis to users for donations or if they want to do it more professional, offer services for a fair price.
They can incorporate as association, collective or cooperative with users as paying members with voting rights.
The #gitea developers concluded after 10 years that it is not able to host its own development and that they depend on #GitHub.

At the same time, the community fork @forgejo is self-hosted for a long time and is also powering the popular @Codeberg and at least 8 other public instances. So this seem to be a good time to migrate if you haven't already.
