I'm against #SelfHosting.

Users should not need to maintain their own server. It needs specialized knowledge to do it right.

Sysadmins who like maintaining servers can do it together in a more efficient way and spread responsibility.

They could offer services on a best-effort basis to users for donations or if they want to do it more professional, offer services for a fair price.

They can incorporate as association, collective or cooperative with users as paying members with voting rights.

Self hosting is a learning curve. We are not sysadmin. We learn from others and best of all, from our own mistakes in order not to repeat them again.

There is nothing wrong in hosting your own services if you know what you're doing.

If not, loads of the open source web apps offer a hosted service in which the sysadmin you are referring to do the job for you for a fee.

I really don't understand the point of this rant, with all the due respect.

@feld i'm not sure if that's a problem

people trust mastodon admins and hosting companies

i think it's more likely that an employee at a hosting company hate their job and leak or sell customer data than a volunteer contributing to a community service

i don't think it is a good approach to be self-sufficient, instead we should learn to work together and combine our efforts

which service would you not want anyone else to host?

It's not that I feel that I'd "not want anyone else" to host services, just that I'd want a high level of trust for anything that could involve personal information or permit any kind of attack/impersonation of myself. DNS and email meet that requirement I think.

I was not familiar with logseq, took a quick look -- it appears that logseq sync is a feature they're offering to members that fund the project and it will host your data on AWS S3. Kinda sad it doesn't seem to allow you to just point to your own object storage server... seems that nobody could offer to host this service for others because logseq only wants you to sync through them.

@feld i think it's even worse. they host on cloudflare infrastructure

currently it's for suppporters. when ready it will be a paid subscription

but they offer an open source server to self host. i think it uses mostly the same code they use. only a small javascript adapter in front of it. it's basically an API that serves an SQLite database. i'm not sure if it works for multiple users. it's end-to-end encrypted. the server does not see your data
