Sure, but chips are still being made. There may be one fab which is very backed up, or even not running at capacity, but it's not like we've "lost the technology".

If we ever get to the point where there are no fabs operating (won't happen IMO), photoresist, metal deposition stuff, etc will all be unobtanium.
@Hoss There was a helium shortage a few years ago... but that was deboonked a couple years after that, because there's still plenty out there. People only noticed because it was like a culmination of a long shortage, not a real shortage, we just messed up our temperature on slow boiling toad, and also slow to get more helium supply to the market since the U.S. unloaded its entire helium reserve to keep the price low and voices high from helium whippets. The reality is there is no real shortage. Fake news. Helium is just inflationary sometimes. Toot that balloon, toot toot dat ass. Heck. We should pump helium into dat ass then toot dat ass while you toot toot dat blown up ass. That's be literally LIT af, yo.

You don't need to believe in a helium shortage to have a chip shortage. SEA is fucked on LNG, that alone is going to cause a whole bunch of stuff to just stop happening, and the supply chains behind fabs are insane, so chips are a canary in the coal mine.

Ive seen the videos of old intel 386 under the microscope and its insane, regardless of anything modern. Can't imagine why anyone would want to etch a chip in their garage even if they could. All that stuff is really cheap to get off the shelf stuff and program it for your own uses.
