If the chemicals to do it at home are available enough that you can get them, it means everything is okay enough that chips are still being made at fabs...

Sure, but chips are still being made. There may be one fab which is very backed up, or even not running at capacity, but it's not like we've "lost the technology".

If we ever get to the point where there are no fabs operating (won't happen IMO), photoresist, metal deposition stuff, etc will all be unobtanium.

IDK, I think China's EUV supply chain will be fine, and the US needs to undergo a restructuring so things stateside are going to be a little chaotic for a while.

@Hoss @pwm @DrBtc @cjd A normal person is not trying to make chips in their garage without state backing. This isn't the boy scout age. Modern hobbyists probably have different projects I expect, like drones or ai tools.

Ive seen the videos of old intel 386 under the microscope and its insane, regardless of anything modern. Can't imagine why anyone would want to etch a chip in their garage even if they could. All that stuff is really cheap to get off the shelf stuff and program it for your own uses.

The same reason why people write free software. It's a fun challenge in the hopes it's useful to others
