Apple’s on-device translation doesn’t know it should ignore URLs, so you can hand it a post written entirely in Chinese with a URL at the end that is also mostly Chinese characters, which it sees as %20-type encoding, and it will be like “☹️ Sorry, I can’t automatically identify this language that’s 50% Chinese characters and 50% hexadecimal keysmash. … But my best guess is Polish.”

by the way, the (genuinely very) nice ladies who taped me up assured me that there's no need to worry; the sensor taped to my throat that drew waveforms on their computer when I spoke wasn't recording my *voice*!, only *vibrations*
reader, the patch management system appears to have forcibly installed the vulnerable software in order to patch it.

@feld that *was* them installing the patch
Company wide email last week: there is an emergency patch for some software you’ve never heard of. Please update manually NOW; if it’s not patched by Tuesday, your machine will forcibly reboot.
Me: o software management portal of my work machine, is this software even installed, that I might update it?
portal: it’s not installed, no.
[Tuesday comes]
Your machine is going down NOW in the middle of the workday because you FAILED TO INSTALL THE PATCH, SINNER.

One thing that I like about Amsterdam is that our neighborhood has its own gardener — the same, specific guy, paid by the city to putter around and take care of all the trees, bushes and flowers on public land.
And most land is public land! A lot of green space that would legally be the private property of the nearest building in the US is public in Amsterdam.

When I said that your discord clone doesn’t need e2ee, I got a lot of comments along the lines of “ then how would I use it to organize the revolution!” The answer is: you don’t. If you have more users than can comfortably share a Signal chat and hence want to use discord or something like it, you cannot POSSIBLY be vetting all of them to a high standard of trust. Your logs ARE leaking. End-to-end encryption between more people than can fit around a dinner table is pointless.
This article confirms what I already assumed, that “open source [information sense, not code sense] intelligence gathering on social media” includes, for the US government, asking for links to join groups that may *feel* private. My own discord has literally like a thousand idlers. It would be very *lucky* if none of them were logging for potentially nefarious purposes! And I remind the active users of this occasionally.

I can't stop thinking about the LLM-generated compiler that passes all the unit tests but emits inner loops that benchmark over 150,000x slower than a gcc debug build.
