One thing that most popular & biased FOSS software maintainers barely realized when they faced such backlash on some change that was very obvious, Most of them were way too focused on “they’re insulting volunteers”, but not “why everyone is insulting a volunteer” and whenever the entire conversations is really that insulting at all.
When i read this discourse, These are all your normal user feedbacks. None were really insulting but more of pointing the problems. But enforcing your opinion and then making up excuses under the name of “community” while suppressing them is not something good to do in the long run.
I would say, though. I don’t think these kind of “insulted volunteers” would be able to withstand the LKML level of discussion. We already saw it happening to one individual that posted and mocked one of the Linux maintainer in fedi, only to be called out by Linus.
