Anyone who has had young children knows it is nearly impossible to 'reason' with them at times, and restraint does not fix the problem, and that's not what the Bible says to do anyway.

I don't agree with the take that someone without children isn't allowed to speak on it because as you well know a lot of people have children even though they have no business having children, and vice versa.
And I think many many people are totally unable to apply a just hand and therefore most all corporal punishment is just dished out by frustrated adults that also never learned to control their anger and they just lash out. Whether or not telling those kinds of people to not hit their child would actually improve anything is questionable though, genetics and all that.

My response was based on what Sam said, which is extremely reactionary in his projection of how he views the topic, and his lack of understanding the difference between correction and abuse, going so far as to, in the first sentence, comparing it to those terrible things.
I don't need to say anything more, as it doesn't matter. A tale as old as time is the man speaking confidently about what he has no experience in, and harming everyone else around him because of it.

One last thing about 'religious angle' - it's contemptuous. God's word is not just a 'neato topic for intellectual debate and study' but actual instruction to be listened to and obeyed, put into practice and have an effect on the world.

I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, it's just I do not believe in God at all, wasn't sure if you were aware of this, and I didn't want to open that can of worms. It wouldn't be right for me to speak on Christian matters.
Just the same for it to not be right for someone who is not a father to speak on fatherhood.

@WandererUber @Rasterman @tyler I agree, While I’d wager I’m never gonna have kids, both for eugenic concerns and a simple view of things, I despite my own… oddness turned out okay, same for most others I know, and trust my folks, physical punishment for EXTREME things might be okay but I’ve no desire to LARP as Ruckus’ father from The Boondocks lol
I will see how I will handle my kids, but I've noticed this too. Sam is trying to act like a guru, even on matters that he really has no place to comment on. That said... I don't really remember being spanked as a kid, for that matter, same with my siblings.
I think the idea that you can reason with a toddler like it's an adult is stupid (common mistake people make these days), but there is also a difference between light slaps to straighten a kid under the age of five out, and outright physical and emotional abuse that I've seen leveled against kids over the age of 10.

It's like everyone forgot that in the late 90s early 00s America tried "no cry parenting" or whatever the hell it was called and it ended up disastrous with a ton of kids on meth.

@tyler @Rasterman @Elliptica @WandererUber it depends per child as well, there's no universal formula, when my sister fucked up (she managed to somehow waste 200$) she felt absolutely awful, so i explained to her how she can avoid doing that mistake.
Yeah. My dog is a good example. He was a rescue, and he had serious separation anxiety, so he would compulsively chew things when I left. At first I would shove his face in it and yell at him, but it didn't do anything. At some point, I realized that I was probably making him scared. From his perspective I left, he would get nervous, and then I would come back and yell or hit him for no reason. So the next time he chewed something up, I ignored it. He probably stopped chewing within a week of me doing that. But, this all depends on the dog, and your ability to understand how he is acting and why.
I think positive reinforcement can work, but it requires you to reward someone only when they do something you want, which is hard when it's your child.
