> pkg -oABI=FreeBSD:15:$(uname -p) -oOSVERSION=1501000 upgrade -r FreeBSD-base

pkg is the best open source package management tool but it is unforgivable to have such terrible syntax to do a pkg-base upgrade. It should instead look like

pkg -oRELEASE=15.1-RELEASE upgrade -r FreeBSD-base

all the other bits -- detecting the ABI, the OSVERSION -- should be automatically handled internally by pkg. This should only be required when you need to do something special like upgrade a jail from the outside which is running a different architecture
