@sodiboo @yassie_j @nay In theory, ActivityPub defines documents on top of JSON-LD, such that everything resolves to an RDF graph etc. However, ActivityPub says that activities have to be in a specific JSON schema representation of the underlying LD, so you can implement AP just fine without ever touching JSON-LD.

@sodiboo @chjara @yassie_j @nay json-ld in activitypub is entirely optional on purpose. The inclusion of the @context field required for json-ld in the json representations isn't mandated. It was defined in json-ld schema for json schema validation I presume, but that never materialized properly anyway.
