How much does the Italian language vary in Sicily? I guess not a lot but I am not familiar overall.

@afreytes there is no “Southern Italian” dialect. There are several, with varying degrees of similarity and difference, both in sounds and terminology. People from the North may be less sensitive to the differences, but obviously for us in the South they are more meaningful ;-)

Even Sicilian itself doesn't exist; there are at least three or four different forms, again with varying degrees of similarity and differences, although they are more similar to each other than e.g. to Neapolitan.

@afreytes so mostly the reason why I only speak of Sicilian is that's the only one I am more sure about, and I don't know if the specific thing I'm talking about is the same in other Southern dialects or how it differs (it may be just pronunciation, but sometimes the same or similar words even have completely different meanings!)

I think most younger people don't speak that much Sicilian anymore, but instead Italian with local accents and various Sicilian words and expressions thrown in.

But yeah, they don't even agree if it's arancina or arancino between the Western and Eastern regions on Sicily. Try ordering the latter in Palermo, and they might give you a look and correct you. 😅
