@ochotona_princeps every single time I've used Matrix my accounts have ended up deleting themselves, last time I ran a server I lost all my data when I had to migrate it and had some random bug break the database. I don't consider Matrix to be functional software and the fact that it's existed for as long as it has (I started using it back in 2015 when it was still called Riot) while still being like alpha quality software that lacks basic features people have wanted for years is such a fucking embarrassment. I wouldn't use Matrix again even if I weren't running a server
@nyx fair enough. it's kind of astounding to me that there's still no drop-in FOSS replacement for discord in [current year] but maybe i shouldn't be surprised
@ochotona_princeps I don't think FOSS has created anything significant in decades, it's all just technically inferior rape-free ethical chungus alternatives to big tech surveillance capital software that sells your data to the 72 demons of the goetia
@nyx @ochotona_princeps i said this once i think but the fact that all the gnu/fsf people focus on shit entirely irrelevant to the normal user (foss graphics drivers, cpu microcode etc) while there are entire industries still running on windows-only software that costs thousands in subscriptions is completely insane
@nyx @ochotona_princeps The fact that Matrix has been around for 10+ years and has received shitloads of funding but all their software is still clunky, slow, lacking in basic features, and generally awful while lacking anything even resembling a roadmap to remedy this situation says all you need to know about Matrix
@scathach @nyx @ochotona_princeps they went after government contracts. Every time a company goes after government contracts, their software turns to shit.
