I don't see the point in asterisks TBH, how does this work? Are you like typing your password and then SUDDENLY: "OMG, that's to many asterisks, I have to delete five last characters and retype them 😱"
I usually either know that I fscked up somewhere — then I press ^W five times to be sure and start over, or I know that I got it right and it would work — considering I used the correct layout. I simply don't see how asterisks would be of any help in my workflow. It might be a tiny bit useful on a phone where you're typing very slo-o-owly, but even in this case it's pretty much negligible 🤷

Yeah, you have a point there! I think I've seen an implementation that made various geometric shapes appear as you type — just to indicate "something's happening".
Swaylock also has something like that — it doesn't show asterisks, but makes segments of a circle change colour as you type, and if you erase all of it, either issuing enough backspaces or pressing 'escape', it becomes red and gets labelled 'clear'.
