During the Civil War and the Union occupation afterwards, there weren't many Mardi Gras celebrations. Joe Cain is credited with bringing back the parades in this area in 1868.

Now, the Sunday before Fat Tuesday is called Joe Cain Day and they have their own unique parades and celebrations....including a procession of 20 of Joe Cain's Merry Widows to the cemetery where he is buried.
