It upsets me that people don't care about privacy and communications security. Mass data harvesting, mass surveillance, digital ID, chat control, VPN restrictions, encryption restrictions, email restrictions, backdoors in every device and component, et cetera - all of it is extremely bad and completely tyrannical.

How can anyone not feel the walls closing in? You're being herded into a pen where you can no longer dissent. After the transposition of the public space into the digital, there isn't really too much of a social/communal backup, like the pub, that everyone goes to without digital organising.

Even modern cars now ping cell towers, so they're constantly tracked, and are beginning to integrate driver cameras, so it doesn't matter if you don't take your phone somewhere, the car itself is spying on you.

There ARE people that care about this but not enough, and even people who should know better are lazy with this stuff and don't put in enough effort.
The problem is that these sites (YT, Netflix, etc) won't really care if you use a VPN, they're going to demand that you self-dox in order to login, and if you don't login then you're either out forever or stuck in a purgatory where you have to identify fire hydrants over and over forever.

The real need is alternative SERVICES...

It doesn't really work that way because lots of people have accounts in lots of places and memes (in one form or another) have a POWERFUL tenancy to propagate across mediums - so what matters is which medium is the intellectual hotspot where memes are originating from. I wrote at length about this effect in my blog post above...
