In the modern era with bush planes, solar / batteries / hydropower, starlink, portable saw mills, etc, all of those places still suck to colonize - but in the 1600s with sailing ships and .... that's it ... the continental US sucked to colonize. So I don't see how those territories are actually any worse...

I wouldn't be surprised to see the White man pushing farther north to get out of the hell on Earth that brownoids are going to create everywhere else.

Honestly if you wanted to squat Yukon or Northern territory, the chance Canada actually bothers you about it is pretty close to zero. And if they did, you could probably invoke some arcane migrant / squatter's right argument and tie it up in courts for a decade anyway.

Unless you get a pole shift those places are inhospitable.

I think you get like snow and ice layers meters deep. I think normal structures would be destroyed so you'd have to go underground or drill into rock. Then there would be the issue of getting out getting fresh air, etc.

Look at Fort Yukon Alaska as an example.

Water would be the issue.

You'd effectively have to hunker down for six months a year.

Ice and snow. There is a reason it is referred to as polar.
