I don't understand, what does "take" even mean here?
I mean, as long as Iran has missiles hiding somewhere in the mountains, they can let you "take" the strait, only to wipe out the first actual oil tanker that attempts to cross.
It's like terrorism, you can't even stop it from happening in a country that you completely "control". But now we're talking about "taking" the strait that's in the shadow of a bunch of suspicious mountains?
IMO this is jaw exercise...

@cjd Boomers perpetually live in 1950 and think it'll be another battle of Incheon
Make a deal with the government of Iran: We won't kill you, we'll actually send you some personal spending money, and you call a ceasefire.
EXCEPT, they killed the government. Now it's a bunch of chaotic militant groups from the IRGC masquerading as a government, and no one of them has enough power to effectively order a ceasefire.
So basically, they're fucked.

@cjd @Terry Iran has missiles and drones with ~1000km range. They're getting satellite surveillance from China. It's not even close to enough to take the mountains surrounding the area. You need an invasion of the entire country to make them stop, and meanwhile no Navy ship has the guts to get within even 500km of the shore.
