long tech rant (disney, hulu, amazon)

Show

so my mom’s hulu (which she watches all the time for live tv) was suspended due to an expired credit card. she was having trouble updating it, so it fell on me to figure out what was happening. and oooooh boy it’s a doozy:

so for starters, we had a hell of a time logging in to the account because when disney fully bought out hulu, they merged all the logins into being MyDisney accounts which somehow royally fucked my moms account so her password can only be recognized certain devices? idk it’s weird but the same email+password worked on my phone’s web browser, but not the TV

anyway, once we got into the account, it then became an issue of changing the payment method. but we can’t change it on hulu, nooooo. the payment was initiated via amazon. it is has to be managed through amazon. but her credit card was already changed on amazon! so i tried cancelling the subscription through amazon, only to find that it is not showing up at all on her amazon subscriptions. huh, that's odd...

so i went back to hulu and viewed the support page for subsciptions via amazon, and it turns out it was not actually through amazon, but instead via
Amazon Pay. and you might be thinking "surely that's the same account as a regular amazon account, right?"
correct! it uses the same sign in! but on pay(dot)amazon(dot)com. what's the difference? well it has a whole different interface! with different payment methods and subscriptions than regular amazon!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

anyway, now that i discovered the problem i quickly cancelled the payment through amazon pay, since hulu says it's no longer supported and just... fuck all that bullshit.

i ended up just making her a new hulu account (after making sure all payments were cancelled on the other one) so she now can log in properly
and the payments get pulled directly by hulu from the card, making it (hopefully) far easier to change in the future.

i still want to explode from dealing with all that though...

@ava When older folks, like parents, complain that all technology sucks, I just solemnly nod.

I feel your pain. I've done stuff like this for my parents and in-laws. It always leaves me scratching my head: "They think normal people can understand all this shit?"

@paco @ava my aunt the other day: "hey, do I need to install anything extra on my phones or computers to secure them? Like newer antivirus, etc?"

me: ignoring the adblockers and whatnot discussion -- "phones, not really, but your Windows computer should have Defender built in now so you don't need to buy/install anything else"

her: *names like 20 different Microsoft Defender products I didn't even know existed, mentions there's one that sounds like it MITMs your HTTPS which is not active*"

me: sounds like you're good to go, you don't need that other one unless you want to share your private banking info with Microsoft
