Randomly making notes on Rimworld maths because I find it interesting. Wildlife carries no risk of being outside, even -11c temperature cold doesn't affect them, I thought that was annoying.

Meanwhile the second you tame them and put them in pens you have to get a secondary barn building at a minimum to keep them all alive and stockpiling tons of hay is very necessary. I think I worked out how to automate it all properly but it is extremely annoying, you need a lot of hay to keep them fed probably triple what you think is necessary to maintain the nutrition.

Yeah I wouldn't do any kind of animal system or hunger mechanic this way, I think it's a bit of a balance problem more than anything.
I'm not a hundred percent on this, it might be modded, but in my games wildlife herds frequently leave the map when a cold snap hits.
It's possible that they don't spawn them in vanilla unless they can survive current temperatures and I'm just pushing the limits by playing with increased planetary axial tilt

the meta for feeding them is planting one of the flowers as long as temperatures allow it, iirc
You're right they do I hadn't properly taken that into account. In Tundra and Ice biomes there are barely any animals because of that. What the dev should have done is allowed for a bit more of a sophisticated farming setup in the hostile environments to make ranching more viable.

As it stands it seems like the best way to do a proper ranching gameplay is to pick maybe a jungle or perhaps ideally a desert biome then you've got consistent hot temperatures.
>What the dev should have done is allowed for a bit more of a sophisticated farming setup in the hostile environments
what do you have in mind?

I wouldn't exactly call temperate/boreal forest a "hostile environment". Ranching is very viable there despite the harsh winters.
On Earth, basically no one was doing sedentary animal husbandry in the tundra though. I think you could probably pull it off with raider kibble and hydro.
Desert might be very tough because you're choked for fertile soil.

But what do I know, I play modded. I can put skylights in an enclosed space around a thermal vent and have a heated greenhouse basically.
And I have sprinklers for the desert.

As for examples there should be specialised structures you can build etc. like hydroponics farms but bigger. I don't know why they keep doing this but devs keep underestimating how obsessive gamers who like building and looting are. The provided mechanics are never enough lol.

especially with rimworld you run into a plausibility problem a lot where the dev is unable to "sell" the abstractions and simplifications he made. Like for example people bleeding out while you are hauling them to the med bay, instead of stemming the flow on the spot which is not in vanilla.

>hydroponics farms but bigger
and you would make hay in these, I take it?
