@Paultron @teto @cjd @apropos "a lot of energy and expense hauling ultra dense inert projectiles up to space"

That's very much not the plan, you mine the tungsten or whatever in space far enough away from Earth's gravity field.

The whole idea back then was to make Project Thor's Rods From God so cheap, with rudimentary sensors, that if you wanted to stop an armored division with a thousand vehicles you'd saturate it by dropping something like ten thousand rods.

As for guidance flaps, perhaps you use something else like gas/tiny rocket jets, or you have them emerge after things get cool enough. Pournelle was more than knowledgeable enough to have avoided pushing an impracticable idea.

Dropping big "rocks" like in the Moon is a Harsh Mistress is more a strategic than tactical thing. The specific novel about this to read about this is Footfall by Niven and Pournelle.

@All_bonesJones @merchantHelios "violates the 1967 outer space treaty" and we should care about that why?? I mean, the first entity to do this will literally own the Earth....

@brimshae "Don't worry about the spinning [akin to rifling]. It's gonna hit with the force of a small meteor anyway." Something like twenty five tones of TNT. Don't even have to quite directly hit a tank to take it out of commission.

@GaryBussy Epstein is generally known from all these emails to be pig ignorant about most everything. For example, he'd read financial stuff in the popular press, stuff he's supposed to know about, then forward it to his financial guys.

Here the green text guy is about the same, doesn't know for example that SSRIs are a now ancient class of drugs, the first coming to the US market exactly thirty years ago. As in, basic, take a pill every day SSRIs are all generics as far as I know and just now can tell with some Brave AI checking (various new wrinkles are covered, like a very very extended release once weekly (!!!) Prozac pill).

This is also a throw everything against the wall without thinking set of claims, like how do they both severely depress libedo etc. and make people more promiscuous??? Does anyone think when they compose or repost this stuff?

@sun @coolboymew That's covered in another post of mine in that thread, see link.

We got his cellphone video last of the big video releases, it and another from a security cam in a building in front of all this shows he was to the right of the vehicle, which was then roughly perpendicular to the street and thus not good for trying to get away.

Then she rather quickly repositioned her SUV to the right so he ended up right in front of her. When she had plenty of room to move even more to the right to clear him and start to get away.

Then we know from other videos she gunned the engine and everything went down very fast as you can see in his cellphone video and hear his "Whoa!"

@coolboymew @sun Correct, and there's no "seems" like he got hit by the three ton SUV, we have it on video albeit the ICE agent at the door blocked our view of him a lot, see link showing his feed sliding back.

People are credibly saying kinetic energy is what matters here, the outer body gets moved, inertia is a bitch for the inner body, so 1/2 mv^2. The velocity was low, but the mass was serious.

Personal subject matter expert ESR comments on what the "internal bleeding" reports mean about the injured ICE agent (if true, of course).

As in, ESR almost died from this once:

Eric S. Raymond @esrtweet

From the replies I got to this post, some of y'all need a tutorial in the diagnosis and management of blunt trauma injuries. While I'm not a doctor, this is something I know a bit about from both book study and some grim personal experience.

So. Jonathan Ross got hit by a 2-ton SUV traveling at low speed. We know it was low speed, because if it weren't, he would be dead and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The effect of that kind of collision is a lot like being whanged by an oversized baseball bat. This is not trivial shit, not just "bruising"....

[In detail, elsewhere he explains this is from the force being transmitted by muscles into the internal viscera.]

Yes, you can be ambulatory after that, and he was, but this is a category of injury that can and not infrequently does kill you later even if adrenaline powers you through the prompt effects.

The problem is that the damage from internal bleeding is cumulative, subtle, and hard to diagnose from the outside unless you get really obvious symptoms like blood in your stool. I nearly died from this once myself, which is how I know about this.

So he went straight to the emergency room. Standard protocol is to put him under close observation and do some diagnostic imaging. If he's bleeding badly enough to have trouble standing, it's surgery time - you need to go in, find the bleeders and repair them.

Fortunately Ross wasn't injured that badly. But don't make any mistake about this, anytime you have viscera injury you were only a few pounds of applied force from death. It's plain blind luck that [driver] Good didn't kill him.

You don't want to surgically intervene if you don't have to, because the trauma from the surgery can be as bad or worse than the injury. So you keep him under observation for a while and then you send him home with instructions to self-monitor for indications that the internal bleeding has become serious. Indications: blood in the stool, bloating, persistent abdominal pain.

If he survives 48 hours without increased symptoms, he'll probably be okay and no further treatment required. I think this period is already past us. But believe me, he's going to be under instructions to take it easy and not stress the bleeders for at least a week.
