I grew about 4 gooseberries last year. They taste awful, just like they used to. Hopefully, I'll get enough to make some jam one of these years.
We have a lot of invasive plants around here and I try to not increase the load.
The deer love them, so I doubt that they'll thrive. Its still worth it to try and grow them!

Hmmm. I grew up in PA and we had both gooseberries and currants. We came back to PA in 2014 and around 2020 I bought gooseberries from Stark brothers.
Everyone says "oh, I haven't seen those since I was little"
