But my point is that impoverished countries can stay impoverished almost indefinitely. All over Africa there are countries that will never get any better unless if they're formally colonized - and colonialism is a bad word so Europeans prefer to maintain slow-burn civil wars and pretend they have no involvement...

Rhodesia was the "breadbasket" of Africa. In a bad year they still produced five times more food than the country consumed.....Just ten years after becoming Zimbabwe they were importing 50% of their food.
