The bitcoin angle is just dumb. If you're operating in any jurisdiction that is friendly to the feds, and the feds have sufficient interest, they will trace the block until somebody liquidates.
In the case of "until somebody liquidates", the "somebody" would end up being some poor sap whose been playing offshore gambling for years and finally got a payout...
But I will add that if you got that money by bashing someone's head in with a hammer, even offshore banks frown on that.
I didn't say it would lead directly to the perp, but you do get a witness or another trace. The real issue is how interested the fed is, e.g. how far are they willing to go. Kidnapping the mother of a major journalist who has even interviewed the president if I recall, and creating a story that puts the feds themselves and their results in the news seems kinda dumb. The fed almost has to solve this for street cred.
