@BroDrillard A bunch of shit just straight up false here.

1) The fleet was stationed in Algeria, not Southern France.
2) The British did not attack without warning, they engaged in talks with the French commander of forces for several hours over the demand to either sail the ships to the United States or the UK, or to scuttle them.
3) The British obviously didn't have the ability to sail the French ships away themselves, hence why they demanded this.
Possible, I haven't seen any other documentation on what happened.

But if it happened the way you describe it, I do understand the French commander. Had he sailed the ships to the US or UK, we can be certain those ships would have been seized. IOW he was asked to hand over France's fleet to some other nation. No wonder he didn't want to do it. He probably considered it an intact fighting force that the Germans couldn't grab that easily. He didn't expect his "allies" to actually attack him. Killing the French sailors still makes Churchill a shitbag.
