I recently made a desk lamp for a charity auction from the off cuts of a previous project. There was a knot in a piece of walnut I couldn't use but the grain around it was quite nice, almost looked like burl. The shade was made from curly maple and planed down to less than 1/16" which still wasn't really thin enough but all I could really do with hand planes. Finished with shellac and paste wax.
