Great documentation. Thank you for sharing.
The only thing that prevents me from self hosting is that you can’t afford any mistakes. And Microsoft and Google make it nearly impossible for small mail servers to deliver their emails.

You could consider a hybrid approach: start with hosting the incoming e-mail yourself and send out via a relay server. When all is running as expected, start sending out some mails via your own server and test deliverability.

So far I have not experienced delivery issues, for example with a custom relay server that runs for 10+ years now.

@mboelen @NebulaTide I've been self-hosting my e-mails since 2001, never moved them to any external provider. If you configure everything in the proper way, they will arrive.
I've seen more Microsoft -> Google, Google -> Microsoft and (yes, incredibly) Google -> Google failures than with custom mail servers
