You can tell they're lying or they'd be showing us a montage video with a "cool soundtrack" showing them disarming / detonating the mines they've found

They haven't done shit yet because we have no capabilities to clear them

@feld there are almost certainly no mines. The cool thing about mines is you only need the threat of mines to be effective and you still need to "clear" the area even if there aren't any mines by verifying that there aren't in fact any mines. I'm not sure a video of a UAV scanning empty water to verify that it's empty will be so exciting.

@stark an underwater drone? Do you have any idea how much energy is required to power one? And if we had this technology, it would still risk detonating the mines by triggering their magnetic fields

So how are you finding them anyway? There's shit visibility in the strait already, and sonar doesn't work reliably because of the two layers of different density / salinity water in the strait which happens from evaporation in the summer.. From a previous discussion:

There's a reason we haven't even cleaned up the unexploded ordinance in Hawaii either: it's fucking hard to find

@feld this is all super interesting. But I don't think it's very relevant. a) there's little evidence there are any mines and b) the goal isn't to remove all obstructions, it's to provide a route that commercial shippers can use with confidence that there isn't a significant risk. There's unexploded ordinance in the Thames but shippers know if they follow the published routes that have been used regularly for years they won't run into anything
