6@feld there are almost certainly no mines. The cool thing about mines is you only need the threat of mines to be effective and you still need to "clear" the area even if there aren't any mines by verifying that there aren't in fact any mines. I'm not sure a video of a UAV scanning empty water to verify that it's empty will be so exciting.

@feld this is all super interesting. But I don't think it's very relevant. a) there's little evidence there are any mines and b) the goal isn't to remove all obstructions, it's to provide a route that commercial shippers can use with confidence that there isn't a significant risk. There's unexploded ordinance in the Thames but shippers know if they follow the published routes that have been used regularly for years they won't run into anything
