my favorite part of "it's only illegal if you get caught" is that it sounds like a joke but it isn't. that's literally how it works. it's not even a technicality. you can genuinely only get charged with a crime if you get caught and they can prove it in a court of law, beyond all reasonable doubt. that's not a bug. that's a feature. it's literally not illegal if you don't get caught.
