@sampler classically a hindu is someone who believes in the divinity of the vedas but personally I believe a hindu can reject most of the vedas and must only revere the three scriptures (upanishads, brahma sutra, bhagavad gita). buddhists dont believe in the vedas but they also aren't hindus imo because of non-theism and non-atmanism although buddhism has a lot of overlap with samkhya and mahayana buddhists revere some hindu aspects of divinity.
@sampler thank you for telling me this I dont know much about buddhism. I did know that some vaishnavis consider guatama buddha an avatara of Vishnu but the justification for this is very silly, basically "he deluded the world with his anti-veda doctrine so that the asuras would be led astray" which isnt exactly revering the buddha
