BSODs in linux (and *nix)! Yay!

Gardenhouse now has Gardenfault, a syslog listener that displays a BSOD when a critical error occurs
It's like systemd-bsod, but without hard depending on journald

@rose @ska Yeah that said it's just for kernel panics, right? Like the rest of the system (say service manager finding something deeply wrong, or the display manager) can't also trigger it right?

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @ska@treehouse.systems no, the kernel one is drm_panic, it's an existing thing
this purely Userspace, it receives logs of level emergency and matches them to a specific list of programs that can cause errors
that way you can for example only cause the bsod when udev crashes

@rose @lanodan you would think these people have a supervision system and a logging architecture for a reason, and restart udevd while loudly logging what happened.

I guess it's better to BSOD because people are used to Windows, it's more familiar to them!

@ska @rose Yeah, something a bit à la Plan9 (prints few lines in the graphical session in a very raw manner) where you'd pretty much make it a notification would likely be a lot better.

That said I'd had my fair share of compositor fails and having no idea if the laptop froze or if it's having a hard time recovering from a failure (well, I made capslock led a cpu activity led since but laptop these days barely have blinkenlights anymore).
