The Raspberry Pi community in a nutshell is wannabe homelabbers that know nothing about computers, but think they are extremely knowledgeable. I hate it.

A great example of that are the various undervolting and underclocking threads on the forums. A bunch of users saying "you don't need to do that, the Pi will underclock itself when it gets too hot", "75°C is fine, it doesn't hurt the board in any way" and "get the official case and that is good enough."

@pwm My Pi 4 died after like 80 hours of use, DRAM kicked the bucket and it wouldn't even meminit. Crashed once, couldn't find the boot device and after cooling down it was completely braindead. All I used it for was rebuilding Pleroma CI.

At the least the site I bought it from RMAd it the same day they received it.

@phnt @pwm Pi4 is probably the worst Pi out there, 3 and 5 seem to be a lot better overall.

Biggest mistake homelabbers tend to do is to shove too many things onto the Pi, overloading it. And yeah, using official case is also a mistake, Pi4 literally overheats in idle if you shove it into official case, what a joke.

Yep, encountered a fun thing. Since they all use the worst CPU vendor imaginable (Broadcom), it leads to fun things like timers not working correctly: https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/6016

Can't even underclock it, because the CPU timer changes tick timings which makes wall clock timings deviate by a lot that even NTP can't fix it. At 300MHz idle, by around 5 minutes per hour of uptime. What a joke of a CPU.

@phnt @pwm @hj I wanted to see if some p would be worth as a supercharged emulator machine, but then I found out it probably wouldn't handle emulators with modern features like upscaling and pixel-perfect DPI correction too well, not to mention anything at N64/PS2 level you're probably better off doing it on your own PC anyway, and let's not even start talking about heavy uzdoom setups with mods, and I just don't see the point beyond using it as a mail/xmpp server and some of those family chat apps, assuming you don't like nextcloud, that is

@vokainen099 @pwm @hj Pi3 pretty much ended at PSX emulation. PS2 was already pushing. And I don't think a Pi5 would be able to handle something like Xbox 360 or PS3 emulation.
