A multilingual population literally has zero upsides and endless downsides. Canada had spent generations enduring endless cultural conflict headaches just between French-speaking Quebec and the rest of the English-speaking country, and yet they decided dumping a bunch of Mandarin and brown-speakers into the mix was somehow a fantastic plan.

There's other parts of Canada than Québec that speak french. There's a few of Acadien enclaves in New Brunswick ( Moncton and Edmunston are both heavily francophone towns ). There's franco parts of Ontario and Manitoba as well.

Point is it's been an issue ever since English-speakers and French-speakers became sandwiched into a single polity through the comical happenstance of North American colonial history.

Everybody would be surprised at the vote as nobody truly wanted to secede as they'd lose the Anglo Canadian population instantly and would have to rewrite much of their law, trade agreements, and political relations.

An Albertan secession would be way funnier because I imagine Canadian libtards would initially celebrate freeing the country from the chuds, then descend into bewildered screeching as they suffer the inevitable economic consequences of said chuds taking a fuckton of oil reserves with them.

The people in power certainly do. Carney might spout the liberal rhetoric to his economically illiterate voter base, but I imagine should he ever actually find himself staring down a legitimate Albertan secession threat the internal consensus is going to be "absolutely fucking not, we'll be completely ruined without that oil".
