@p I think after all this time I quite doubt it makes sense to use whitelist federation, except maybe with the expectation that it's an alt account, but so far I've always seen those end up in nasty drama-blowups.
And well in my mind whitelist federation was more for like designed-isolated stuff like the social-network-like stuff within corporations and universities.

So I'd more recommend people to regroup in stuff like chatrooms, possibly invite-only kind if they want a friendly/safe-space.

That's what I think makes sense as a use-case, you know, "This is a group that wants to talk to each other and not talk too much to the outside" and it's like running a better version of phpBB, a lot of the performance issues go away when it's really small like that.

That kind of thing works also. I think Pleroma's good for that stuff, though.

@lanodan @p Oliphant built the so-called island networks for a similar if not the same purpose. A safe-space-ish federated network utilizing mostly GTS in whitelist federation mode with some management on top of it for managing "islands", which more or less are instances that agree to whitelist themselves to form a separated island from the whole network. Instances can then be part of multiple islands. It probably has multiple issues besides the tendency to create echo chambers that amplify drama. Broken threads/addressing when instances not fully agreeing on a whitelist set are mentioned in a single post, are probably a thing.

Fedi wasn't really built for this and multi-node IRC networks/XMPP MUCs are probably a much better solution to the same problem.
