my favorite part of "it's only illegal if you get caught" is that it sounds like a joke but it isn't. that's literally how it works. it's not even a technicality. you can genuinely only get charged with a crime if you get caught and they can prove it in a court of law, beyond all reasonable doubt. that's not a bug. that's a feature. it's literally not illegal if you don't get caught.

this of course only true in the United States. it is not the case in Sweden, where it is forbidden by law to be a criminal
