@kaia I don't think it's true (because I haven't found any other reference to it), but I once read that, in Japan, it is one's own actions what give honour to one's ancestors, as in, if you do well in battle, your parents, grandparents, etc., would retroactively become dukes or whatever, but not your children, because they did fucking nothing to earn it. I personally like that idea better, even though it is very much useless in practical terms and the author I read it from probably made it up.
