one of my new friends who's asian when she asked my ethnicity also asked me my "spiritual ethnicity" and after saying "you mean like rachel dolezal?" I admitted to being an indiabu. I said "I like hinduism and stuff". I did not admit how deep the rabbit hole goes...

I feel like I'm basically culturally arab, but... that's... yeah... combination of growing up latino as a white person in an otherwise meztizo chicano family (a lot of Mexican cultural things that are both unlike the indigenous way and unlike modern Spain are basically holdovers from the Emirate of Cordoba) and then having been muslim on top of that in a community that was largely Syrian and Arabian means that I've been immersed in Arab and Arab Adjacent culture for a hot minute.
But my spiritual culture? Shoot, IDK. I don't seem to fit in anywhere.

the bow at the waist after reciting surah al fatiha doesn't have you put your arms out like that, you put your hands on your thighs.

@technicallydifficult @technolyze I was friendly in college with an aramean syrian who looks literally indistinguishable from a white european.
@georgia @technolyze
A lot of people in Syria and Jordan and Lebanon look indistinguishible from europeans. This is also true of Iran and Afghanistan.

@technicallydifficult @technolyze yeah a lot of people think middle easterners are always very brown but theres def a range, just like south asians. for instance some palestinians (who get more attention in the left-wing media because were racist) have blonde hair and blue eyes because theyre descended from Bosnian Muslims.

Oh yeah, because my winter muslim clothes were almost all black (no money for embroidery or expensive colors like blue) I got mistaken for this Iraqi Bedouin tribe who are very pale and wear all black and have red hair and blue or green eyes, and it got me curious, and I found out they were a mix of Roman and Nordic descent and acted as mercenaries for the caliphate armies back in the day, to the point that their tribal clothes were the inspiration for elite military unit uniforms in the middle east.

@technicallydifficult @technolyze that is super neat

I apparently look indistinguisaible from that tribe in my winter clothes, so that's kinda wild. Yahya (who is Iraqi) was telling me about them.
