interesting effigy dated 1376.. the man holds his great helm to the side of his hip and appears to be sporting some seriously shredded ab definition. there is no record of knights wearing the muscle cuirasses of classical antiquity, but surely this guy is not exposing his bare midriff with nothing but a cloak on?? what do you guys think? 🤔

114th century great helms are meant to be oversized to go over a “secret helm” or a simple bascinet with chainmail around the neck. the idea was that you could wear them both while on horse and then have the option to take it off if you wanted more vision while fighting on foot
