Well, "what do people whine about to this day and what was the rallying cry" versus "what was the motivation of the people that actually pushed it".

I was, when this shit occurred, working at a company that was making a browser extension (I have reasons to hate JavaScript), watching 3.4 roll over to 3.6. Firefox was enshittifying itself just fine under Eich *before* Chrome was released. The only reason they had any share was that their only competition was IE: they spent all of their time paying lipservice to being the browser for hackers while constantly trying their damnedest to alienate hackers. We got a lot of "but freedom" from a company doing mostly closed development and actively shitting on devs, and this is what Google understood that Mozilla did not: you don't get the mass market by chasing the mass market, you get it by trying to appeal to people that build and the market follows, especially in the case of a browser where people care about websites and extensions more than they care about which icon they click to see them. I watched people come back from Google's conference absolutely shitting themselves over how easy it was to produce a Chrome extension. Since the Netscape days, they have been insular and they genuinely do not understand the world outside Mozilla. You can see it yourself: look at the comments under the FF 3.6 announcement. You read between the lines on jwz's blog, you'll see all the signs.

I'm not going to say that Google didn't hammer the nails into the coffin, but Mozilla was doing its damnedest to dig its own grave long before Chrome was released.

Last I checked, it is impossible to build without downloading binaries. I'm sitting here on Firefox because Seamonkey won't build on ARM64, god knows why.
