I'm not a bike guy so I don't know what you're looking for, but you're trying to eliminate all of the really expensive problems that you will kick yourself for buying. Engine problems, transmission problems I guess. If the transmission can't switch into 3rd for example, you're gonna get out on your first ride and you're gonna ride it right into the shop...

i will give it a good shakedown.. always been a pretty good judge of reliability
even my 500 dollar 93 Ranger .. i just knew it was good for another 50k minimum
drove the wheels off it twice

Not to dissuade you, but you know everyone who owns a bike for long enough eventually ends up with fucked knees and elbows...

the scariest thing of my childhood was , a cop coming to our door .. said my dad wrecked on a steel bridge .
