That's a good point - though in this case it's not *entirely* a non-argument. "You are predisposed to believe X because it makes you feel better about Y" is valid as supporting evidence, but they need to also make the case that believing X is in fact irrational.

To sharpen my point a little bit: If you make a compelling case that a common belief is irrational, then it's a fair question to ask "well then why do so many people believe it?", and it's at that point that you can trot out old Uncle Freud.

But if you lead with the Freudian argument then you're cheating.
