Trump is old enough (and not focused enough on it) to not understand how modern conflicts work. He sees a bunch of blown up boats and aircraft, along with all the missiles strikes and is thinking "shit, that'd take us out".

On top of that he's surrounded by smoke blowers that he actually listens to instead of his generals or intelligence agencies.
