There aren't really any exceptions to this: When someone says a self-defense killing is wrong because the person didn't *deserve* it, they've lost the plot.

The question of whether someone *deserved* it is entirely out-of-scope of the question of legitimate self-defense.

Even if the kindest person on the earth has a mental breakdown and pulls a gun in a crowded space, self defense is legitimate.

And even if the most evil depraved human on the planet is arrested unarmed - extrajudicial killing is still extrajudicial killing.

Because they have not been convicted in a court, it's generally assumed that NO ONE deserves to die, ever. So saying someone "didn't deserve it" is stating an obvious fact and using it to make a controversial implication (that the shooting was not legitimate self-defense).

However, rather ironically, saying that they DID deserve it is entirely different because it's just stating an opinion that the person is not worthy of living. And everyone's welcome to their opinion.
