@f0x I'm gonna guess what this refers to and you tell me if I'm right...
there are probably families of amino acid sequences of that have similar "meaning" in the structure of a protein, even between proteins of different structure and function. different processes converge on these "port numbers" as a consequence of selection reusing stuff it already has in its toolkit-- ie furin cleavage sites that let proteins be activated specifically when/where furin is present
