@allison @chjara emulators… I consider them entirely legal, at least as long as they don't bundle in non-free code and quite few times you need stuff like boot roms, which are typically proprietary with little to no libre reimplementations.

But I'd still wish you could have libre licensing of what runs in emulators, if only to make stuff like mods legal.

@lanodan @chjara legality is entirely not a concern to me, but from a practical perspective I prefer libre software because of the guarantees it offers

@allison @chjara I take legality as the only difference between libre and not. Otherwise it's just random kinds of source code access or even just binary edits where if you do anything with it either it's kept personal or it's stuck to pirate-lands with little to no cooperation possibilities.

@lanodan @chjara There's a qualitative difference between source code which is designed and maintained to be edited by third parties in a general public and binary artifacts which don't have said guarantees and were never intended to.

@allison @chjara True, and to be clear, I'm not on the side of "everything needs to be libre software".
There's few things where I think they need to be (like for gov/bank/… stuff I so wish it would be open protocols), but not everything.

And I appreciate when something is libre, but like for example I'm not going on a jihad against the demoscene for typically only sharing carefully made binary builds.
