#MassEffectMonday

Finished Mass Effect 2 (LE) the other day.
If you want to replay you should read. I will recommend mods.

>Quote from my ME1 review: "From memory, ME2 improves on ME1 massively and I wonder if I still feel like this when I've replayed it. There's certainly a lot of room."
No. No I do not. Certainly, they've tightened up some aspects and by a good margin as well, but they dumbed others down.

>Gunplay and Game mechanics

-Let's start with the obvious: Thermal clips are a straight up downgrade. It's not more tactical, it's less so.
-Shared power cooldowns. No other game does this, and for good reasons. It becomes impossible to combo a dude. Two of the biotic powers are specifically made for this, pull and push. Lift them and fire them off. Not possible anymore. Mod this! (No Shared Power Cooldowns)
-Gun handling generally and heavy weapons spice it up, definitely improved vs ME1

-Difficulty curve is inverted, as is fashionable for RPGs. You can get your ass kicked early on in some situations, but from mid game on it's not a problem. When you mod the power cooldowns, you should bump the difficulty and then it becomes almost fun and almost interesting.

>Exploration and side missions:
-Again, obvious first: the probe mining is stupid. Similar to the rest, you are disallowed from using your skill to progress faster. While the probe is flying you may not move the reticle. While you are scanning, the reticle moves unnecessarily slowly. Get the One Probe All Resources mod! And one for infinite fuel and probes. Don't waste your time, it's not interesting.

-Hammerhead explorations are more of a sidegrade. The vehicle itself, like the Mako, COULD be fun but they nerfed the movement mechanics into the ground. For example, you can't boost and then jump taking the momentum with you. Why? Because by this game the studio was locked in the branching paths emphasis on paths style of "game" design. You're not even allowed to drive how you want.
Missions were okay. Vehicle too squishy, but I see some potential. Bioware apparently didn't, they brought the Mako back for 3.

-Side quests aren't much better than the original. You may percieve them to be because of Loyalty Missions. Those count as Main Quests imo. The actual ones are unvoiced except for the anomaly beacon voicemail. There are barely any characters to interact with. It's a bit more streamlined because you don't have to ride around aimlessly in the Mako to traverse an empty planet. Sick of them by now to tell the truth.

The galaxy feels less mysterious overall, even as you are supposedly on the fringes (You are not)

>UI
Not improved, just changed up so you don't notice. They needed a better inventory handling system and cooler armor. instead they give you DLC armors that force you to keep the helmet on, and remove other options. The main armor has customizable parts and those are cool and enough for this type of game. Hacking and electronics games are no more than a sick joke, as is the probe launching.
Get a minigame autocomplete mod, it's not fun and a waste of time.
Get the one where you need to start the minigame still because enemies can shoot at you. Otherwise it's too much cheese.

>Visuals
You need the Lighting Restoration mod. Even then, LE looks funky sometimes. Generally okay texture work, nothing too jarring. There are character (especially Liara) consistency mods, maybe grab those and 4k texture resamples. If you want that.
Way more punchy and striking than parts of ME1, but loses that clean future feel for a "grungy edge" they were going for. Illium is nice.
Character action alright for the most part, some animations clunky.

>Audio
yeah baby. very solid, even if not as atmospheric and mysterious as ME1

>Writing
To my surprise, this was way worse than I had remembered. There are cool places and characters, and when the worldbuilding works it REALLY works. But the decline is very noticeable. Sometimes it feels like they are cannibalizing their own lore for plot instead of making something new that's cool. Illium is great, Omega works fine. There are a couple of set pieces that just don't work. Compare ME1 Ilos to ME2 "Derelict Reaper" (really nigga?) and visiting the Migrant Fleet, Tuchanka (twice), the ridiculous lamer version of the Citadel, retreading "human colony attacks" etc. Next you're gonna tell me they'll have you go back to Eden Prime for Mass Effect 3 ( 💀 )
Characterization is also a little flat. Shepard feels a lot like Jack Bauer. Sometimes it's cool when he just shoots or tortures the guy instead of running in circles.

>[Ran out of characters. Continued below, with mod list!]
Sometimes his, but very often the behavior of background NPCs veers into "self-parody" territory though.
Samara's loyalty quest features the serious, albeit edgy, scenario that all 3 of her daughters are succubi ("Ardat-Yakshi") and hunting one down. They are canonicall the ONLY 3 of them in the entire galaxy. Offhand side merchant character: "Erm why don't you try this sweet sauce they make in *AN* Ardat-Yakshi monastery?" Completely devalues it.

Similar with talking about games and copy protection and "Asari-Hanar porn" I mean yeah, we all were horny teenagers with a boner once sure, that might be a little cool. But it devalues the entire setting. A big negative for me.

>Characters and Roleplay
I said above that sometimes Shepard acts silly for the meme, but with the LE they toned down the weighting of Paragon and Renegade. You don't have to lock in into one, and can do what feels right as the situation calls for. Big step up compared to vanilla.

Besides that, the crew mates is where the game shines. They're all well written (except Zaeed and Kasumi) and feel like actual friends of Shepard's by the end. Wrex reunion on Tuchanka is also very nice. A bit short, but nice. This increased focus on them really grounds the game and this is perhaps its strongest aspect.
Legion has voiced lines and scripted interactions for missions that happen before you can even recruit him (Reaper IFF mission).
My suggestion: Get the mod that places him at the wreck of the Normandy. Then you can unlock him early and see more of him. I like the guy, what can I say?
People seem to not like Jacob but despite his skin color I found him unobtrusive, if a bit bland.

At the time: Solid 7.5/10 for a game (non-IGN scoring).
Presentation and Gameplay both. It's sad to see that the world suffered in the sequel, but as a game it's simply a bit better. Especially with mods, though I didn't score with that in mind.
Today: 6/10 It plays fine, but does nothing special, and spacebar is bound to ten trillion actions which can get annoying. You feel the years. A bit clunky.

@WandererUber Good review. Agree regarding the gameplay and atmosphere critique. There are some parts of 2 that still retain that atmosphere of 1, merged with the dark thing they were going for, that are quite nice. Mainly the music, I think.

What did you think of the direction they went with the reapers? I remember finding Harbinger to be ridiculous and disappointing. Many made this criticism at the time. And then retconning the Protheans into insectmen in the 3rd was also disappointing.
@CatLord Thank you.

>What did you think of the direction they went with the reapers?
I omitted all this from the review because it would have been too much work to formulate and compress my take on the overarching story, as well as the Lazarus project. So this might be a bit long

The fact that Harbinger and the collectors play basically no role outside of the main story is noticeably bad. In Mass Effect 1 you encounter Geth even in the side missions.
Worsens the Collector-Reaper disconnect.
Harbinger may be a little ridiculous. There's little interaction except in the tacked-on Arrival DLC. He's not Sovereign and it's fine to have a "puppet master" type for a change, so it's okay that Harbinger wasn't the Collector ship for example.
Could have been mini-bosses though, with Harbinger-controlled human reaper as finale. But since he just disappears and you don't slow the new Reaper approach plan, it does feel empty when he just abandons control of the Collector at the end.

I also don't like that they sprinkled them everywhere. Reaper artifacts lying around in every pawn shop.

It's disconnected, but Mass Effect 2 is not all bad. Sure, a 2 year time skip and a resurrection were going to be issues.
All would be forgiven had they not missed the mark with ME3, if only because ME2 fleshes out the world as Shepard cleans up the back alleys. I looked this up just for the reply and I totally forgot that Harbinger even was in ME3, so they missed the opportunity to have proper payoff there as well. THE ME1->ME2 disconnect may be 2's fault, but the second cut is an ME3 issue.

>retconning the Protheans into insectmen in the 3rd
I agree. Javik was a massive mistake. It cheapens the Ilos sacrifice, it turns the Protheans into a sideshow. That's what I meant by them "cannibalizing their worldbuilding to generate plot". ME1 didn't (not really possible in a debut installment). The Thorian was just the Thorian.

The problem is made worse with ME2s disjointedness. Had they not turned Liara into a girl power spy off-screen, there could have been more focus. She was an archeologist. Of course her and Shep crawl the galaxy for clues! That was the whole point! They sort of kinda tried to right the ship in this regard, but since they only had ME3 left, they took a shortcut and placed the Crucible blueprints on Mars, in a Prothean archive. How convenient. Protheans this, Protheans that. There were many species older than them and this could have been explored instead of just using them as another story thread to tie up. Like the genophage. Like the Geth-Quarian conflict.
