6@TrevorGoodchild @lain @Shlomo I don’t think it was even that, they probably just went around wardriving - Starlink terminals come with a builtin wi-fi access point, which probably has a default SSID of “Starlink-92f9c2” or whatever, and that gets you close enough to search the building
you already know that the antenna has to have an unobstructed sky view, so the number of places you have to search is extremely limited (and there are probably multiple antennas placed in those locations)
now, I’m sure that on-board wi-fi can be readily disabled and networking just done via plain Ethernet, but at least 50% of the people using it probably aren’t going to do that (“why make more work for yourself, habibi, just plug it in, the Americans are clever”)
of the other 50% who thought they were being clever, even if the SSID was renamed, I’m willing to bet that Starlink devices can be identified by their OUIs (prefix of MAC address); I guarantee that the Iranian security services have this information, and with a little research one could probably figure out which ones to look for
Barbie sez: “opsec is haaaaard”
They're transmitters, even if they beam sort-of directionally up (they're not lasers) an airplane with an antenna could easily spot them, two airplanes would give you two possible locations of which one will likely be easily discarded, three airplanes would pinpoint it.
