I want to try make my own model kit of a boeing 707 in 1/200th scale simply because there just isn't one. I've found some pretty good technical drawings and references so i'm fairly confident it's doable. I reckon i'm gonna make life easy and focus on just one model, the -138B. Primarily because that's the model of 707 that john travolta owned (VH-EBM/N707JT) meaning that theres a shit ton of photos of it out there, the fact that they were a model specifically made for QANTAS also helps this decision.

The 707's family tree is convoluted and confusing but in essence, the "138" bit means that it's QANTAS' shortened (by 10ft) version of the original 707-120, and the B means that it has a lot of the changes and upgrades from the Boeing 720 including a wing glove (basically an extension of the leading edge near the wing root to increase sweep angle), JT3D turbofan engines, enlarged vertical and horizontal stabilizers as well as a small ventral fin.

I'll be using freeCAD because i fucking hate myself (and i'm expecting this to take a while and might lose access to my beloved solidworks. Fusion360 looks equally as janky for what i need to use it for tbh) but i have gotten a wing and a panel line so that's evidence enough that it's possible as far as i'm concerned lmao

sike i'm using solidworks because it turns out that freeCAD can't use guide lines for lofting. Had a bit of a fuck around with the front fuselage section, as it turns out the side view and the front profiles in the technical drawing i posted don't line up at all whatsoever so i'm kinda just gonna have to do what i was hoping to avoid and do all the loft profiles based on vibes unfortunately.

the main thing i'm worried about when i start detailing in earnest is the cockpit glass. The 707 (and 727 and 737) use flat windows and the way the fuselage transitions from curved to flat and back to curved is weirdly incomprehensible to me. I reckon it should hopefully be as "easy" as making a whole bunch of flat planes at funny angles, lopping off some bits and filleting the rest although we all know that probably won't be the case :)

Failure is always an option. Maybe if i add wings to it the problems will suddenly go away. Unfortunately its nearly the start of the uni semester again so i'll probably have to shelve this until like november lmao

ok so we're getting somewhere. the stabilizers still need their wingtips (which i dont wanna do because it's fucking tedious) but there's not much left of the basic shape, pretty much just the fillet/bulge around the wing-body join left

@paper9741 I ended up finding a facebook post (of all things) buried underneath a lot of other garbage search results that explained the general technique in pretty decent detail not too long after your first reply lol. We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they were going be easy
