It's a sign of a dying system. As it collapses, those in power will clench their fists tighter to hold on. Every whisper will become a sign of some future opposition, requiring immediate suppression.

@Grumblesock @Humpleupagus @ottman It currently is, but as I learned from Russia blocking @simplex by detecting it's packets in traffic, when they do care enough, it'll stick. We (the masses) are blind to the danger of big government.
I'm not concerned. Things will be shitty for a while, but they don't have enough "loyalists" to hold up the regime. Right now, their enforcers are people who want to to keep their jobs, not true believers. They'd be the first to run and hide when people start popping off.

There's a big difference between Russia and the west.
Russia is authoritarians, it has been since the Tsars, there was never any freedom in Russia, ever. Authoritarianism is normal there.
In the west, authoritarianism is wrong, everyone knows it's wrong, everyone is embarrassed to implement it. So they have to hire some Indian with a fake CV to do it using ChatGPT and it ends up being broken trash that:
1. Doesn't block what they're trying to block
2. Blocks a bunch of important commercial stuff that they're trying not to block
3. Creates a minimum bar of selection pressure to get people to give a shit about better networking protocols and encryption
